S/S 2012 Challenge #6: Block Party

“Fuchsia, mint, emerald and orange – electric block color is so bright now! Pep up your palette with bold primary colors.” net-a-porter

Color blocking is all the rage for the past couple of seasons and continues to rock the runway.

I put together a monochromatic color block outfit today, pairing red and orange analogously, and adding on gold/tan accessories.

For the idiot’s guide on color blocking, the color wheel below can help you mix and match. You can have fun mixing different color potions and this is probably the season where you can do no wrong with color co-ordination. But if you want to play safe, the most common color schemes are complementary, analogous, and triadic colors.

Dictionary:

  • Complementary: colors directly opposite each other on the color wheel, e.g. red, green
  • Analogous: colors next to each other on the color wheel, e.g. blue, blue-violet, violet
  • Triadic: colors evenly spaced out on the color wheel, e.g. red, yellow, blue (click to see the example of this color-block outfit)

A word of advice for the first timers: you will not go wrong when you mix colors of the same intensity;  e.g. bright/bright, neon/neon (see neon color-block outfit), pastel with pastel (pastel outfit). Go POP some colors into your outfits now (!)
